 Classification of Compressors

Compressors are mechanical devices that are used to compress a gas, typically air or a refrigerant, in order to increase its pressure and temperature. They are a critical component in many industrial and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems.

Compressors can be classified into several categories based on their construction, mode of operation, and application. Some common classifications include:

Positive Displacement Compressors: These compressors increase the pressure of a gas by trapping a fixed volume of gas and then decreasing the volume of the trapped gas. The most common types of positive displacement compressors are reciprocating compressors, rotary compressors, and screw compressors.

Dynamic Compressors: These compressors increase the pressure of a gas by using a spinning impeller to increase the velocity of the gas, which in turn increases the pressure. Centrifugal compressors and axial compressors are the most common types of dynamic compressors.

Reciprocating Compressors: Compressors in which the compressing and displacing element is a piston having a reciprocating motion inside a cylinder. They are mainly used for high pressure applications.

Rotary Compressors: Compressors in which the compressing and displacing element is a rotating element. The most common types of rotary compressors are the rotary vane compressor, the rotary screw compressor, and the rotary lobe compressor.

Screw Compressors: Compressors that rely on twin meshing helical screws to compress the gas. They are efficient and have low noise level, typically used for heavy duty applications and process air.

Centrifugal Compressors: Compressors that rely on a spinning impeller to increase the velocity of a gas, then the velocity energy is converted to pressure energy. Used primarily in large industrial and power generation applications.

It is important to note that each classification and type of compressor has its own unique advantages, disadvantages, and best uses, it's crucial to select the right type of compressor that fits your specific application and usage needs.
